He takes the mound on Wednesday afternoon inside T-Mobile Park as the Tigers look to sweep the Seattle Mariners. The Tigers combined on a one-hitter in Monday night’s 4-1 victory over Seattle behind a dazzling performance from Casey Mize and have now won five games in a row against Seattle dating back to Aug. 2024 when they swept a three-game series against the Mariners in Detroit.

Skubal went 18-4 with a 2.39 ERA for the Tigers last season, posting career highs in wins, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts en route to his first All-Star Game appearance. He became the first pitcher to win the Triple Crown in a full season since 2011 when former Tigers great Justin Verlander accomplished the feat. The 28-year-old Hayward, California native is 41-32 in his career with a 3.40 lifetime ERA and is 3-0 in three career starts against the Mariners.

The Mariners will counter with veteran right-hander Luis Castillo (0-1, 3.60 ERA) who has back-to-back seasons with double digit victories. Castillo spent five and a half seasons with Cincinnati before being traded to Seattle in 2022 and was rewarded with a five-year, $108 million extension later that season.

Detroit has won six of the last eight meetings against the Mariners in Seattle with each of the last five wins coming by two or more runs.
