The Seattle Mariners look to take a commanding 2-0 lead against the Toronto Blue Jays, before they head back home for three games in this ALCS.

The Seattle Mariners look to shock the baseball world once again, when they face off against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 2 of the American League Champion Series on Monday night. There were very few people that would have given Seattle any shot in the opening game of their first ALCS since 2001. That’s not to say that Seattle doesn’t have what it takes to win this series. But Seattle was coming off a 3-2 win in 15 innings to clinch the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers in five games on Friday. With their season on the line, they depleted their rotation and bullpen using seven pitchers in that instant classic game where Jorge Polanco hit a walk-off single to sent Seattle into this series. But all the M’s did was come out with an all-time gutsy pitching performance in the opening game on Sunday against Toronto in the Blue Jays backyard. Seattle won Game 1 by a 3-1 final against Toronto, who was just coming off an ALDS series where the Blue Jays bats dominated the New York Yankees. Because they dominated, Toronto had extended rest. The extra-inning winner-take all game against Detroit really brewed up a tremendous amount of momentum that will be difficult for Toronto to slow down. The good news for Toronto is that it is still the favorite here a day later in Game 2 with a -130 line in their favor to tie this series before it heads to Seattle on Wednesday.

The win for the Mariners was the first for the team in the ALCS in 2001 against the New York Yankees. Toronto got off to a hot start in the game, on a George Springer dinger as the veteran continues to add on to his bounce back season. He was the most improved hitter year-over-year in the MLB this season. After hitting .220 a year ago, Springer batted .309 with a 4.8 WAR which was his most since his All-Star 2019 season with the Houston Astros. But that was only one of two hits the Blue Jays could acquire on the entire night. Bryce Miller pitched the best game of his career, giving the Mariners bullpen a much needed break.

Miller gave up the homer to Springer, but settled down giving up only one more hit to Anthony Santander to go six innings. Somehow on short rest, Seattle’s bullpen didn’t give up another hit. Cal Raleigh continued his prolific season hitting his 62nd home run of the year to tie the game in the sixth inning. Polanco would drive in Julio Rodriguez in the inning that proved to be the winning run. He got another RBI single in the eighth to give Seattle more breathing room. Don’t expect the Toronto bats to go quiet on back-to-back nights though.

Toronto will look to bounce back in Game 2 by starting Trey Yesavage. The righty has only pitched four games this season, and the Blue Jays have won all of them. He was 1-0 in three games with a 3.21 ERA in the regular season. The rookie made his debut on Sept. 15 against the Tampa Bay Rays. He got his first postseason win in a 13-7 victory against the New York Yankees, where he didn’t give up a hit and struck out 11 batters in 5.1 innings of work. Seattle will start Logan Gilbert who is 1-0 in this postseason as well getting the Game 3 victory against the Tigers. He is unbelievably making the start today after pitching two innings in that 15 inning series finale on Friday. Gilbert gave up three hits, but most importantly didn’t let Detroit get any go-ahead run. This is shaping up to be another great pitcher’s duel in Game 2.
