The ALCS looks completely different and tied up heading into Game 5, when the Seattle Mariners host the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night.

If you are rooting for the away team in the 2025 American League Championship Series, you’ve walked away from each of the first four games between the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners a happy camper. Seattle won the first two games games in Toronto dominating offensively, and looked like they were going to run away with this series. The Blue Jays have returned the favor putting up runs with relative ease in the first two games in Seattle. Toronto tied this series with a statement 8-2 win on Thursday night. The way this series is going, the Blue Jays will win on the road in a landslide. If the trend stays the same though, Seattle fans can have hope that the Mariners can still win the series in seven games. This is shaping up like the 2023 ALCS so far, between the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers. The Astros had homefield advantage, but each team won every road game in the Rangers’ run up to their first World Series in franchise history. Seattle is trying to accomplish the same feat, but this game is considered a toss up with both teams holding on to a -110 line as the favorite to win.

Game 4 of the ALCS started very similarly to the way Game 3 started, with a Seattle homer making it look like the Mariners were back to dominate. This time is was from Josh Naylor in the second inning. But much like the first game in Seattle, the home team’s offense went dormant for much of the rest of the game. Seattle didn’t score again until the sixth inning when the game was too far out of reach. Andres Gimenez hit a two-run homer to take the lead for Toronto in the third in which the Blue Jays wouldn’t relinquish. It was part of a four-run night for the Toronto shortstop. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his fifth homer of these playoffs to run up the score in the seventh.

The most inspiring performance though had to be from Jays’ starter and future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer. It was the 31st postseason game and 500th start of Scherzer’s brilliant career. Scherzer had been struggling though lately in the postseason with an 8.79 ERA in his previous four postseason starts. But Scherzer recorded his first playoff win since Game 1 of the 2019 World Series where his Washington Nationals won it all against the Houston Astros. Scherzer went 5.2 innings giving up just one run while striking out five batters. Toronto manager John Schneider went to check on his pitcher in the fifth, but Scherzer yelled him back off the mound to stay in the game. All he did in return was strikeout Randy Arozarena to end the inning. The 41-year-old more than still belongs in October. In comparison, Seattle starter Luis Castillo went just 2.1 innings, giving up three runs to earn the loss in his shortest postseason start in his career. Before this game, Castillo had a 1.40 ERA in five playoff outings.

The Mariners will still be going for their first ALCS win at home since 2001, when they start Bryce Miller on Friday. The righty was 4-6 in the regular season with a 5.68 ERA. He was amazing in his last start in Game 1 against the Blue Jays in this series. Miller went six innings giving up just one run and two hits. They’ll need him in the same way, if the Mariners are to avoid having to win two more games in Toronto. The Blue Jays will counter with Kevin Gausman in a rematch of Game 1. He got the loss in the series opener, but he didn’t pitch poorly at all going 5.2 innings while only giving up two runs on three hits.
