The San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds will close out their opening series with a rubber match on Sunday afternoon.

Early into the MLB season, the Cincinnati Reds host the San Francisco Giants for the final game of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. Sunday’s game will be the rubber match as the Giants took game one and the Reds took game two. On Saturday, the Reds earned a 3-2 victory to improve to 1-1 on the season, ruining Justin Verlander’s debut for the Giants. Matt McLaun hit a home run and a double, both off of Verlander. Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit the go-ahead home run for the Reds in the sixth inning. Leadoff hitter Heliot Ramos hit a double along with Luis Matos, both in the first inning. The win was credited to Nick Lodolo after going six innings in his first start of the 2025 season.

The Giants are also 1-1 on the season after Saturday’s loss which was credited to Spencer Bivens who came in to relieve Verlander. Bivens gave up the third run in his one inning of work, striking out one batter. Jung Hoo Lee went 1-for-4 with one RBI while the other run came from the bat of Wilmer Flores with a solo shot in the top of the second. It was his second home run of the year in the very young season.

The projected starting pitchers for the final game of the series are Robbie Ray for the Giants and Nick Martinez for the Reds. Ray finished the 2024 season with a 4.70 ERA and Martinez finished the season with a 3.10 ERA.

Following the opening series the Giants will travel to Houston for a three game series. The Reds will host the Texas Texans.
