Memorial Day kicks off in the MLB with the Detroit Tigers hosting the San Francisco Giants in this series opener.

The Detroit Tigers host the San Francisco Giants for their first and only series this season starting on Memorial Day on Monday afternoon. This is a rematch of the 2012 World Series and this is going to be as about as evenly matched a series as we could ask for. Only three games separate these teams in the win column with Detroit holding that advantage. The Tigers are leading the AL Central by four games while the Giants are just one game out of the top spot in the NL West. If that wasn’t convincing enough, odds makers are viewing this series opener as a coin toss with both teams holding a -110 line.

Detroit is coming off a 5-0 win in the finale of a four-game series against the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday. The Tigers had lost three in a row before avoiding the sweep. The win couldn’t have happened without the tremendous performance from starter Tarik Skubal. He was sublime, pitching a complete-game shutout while just giving up two hits while striking out 13. The last number was a career high and it was Skubal’s first complete game of his career. Detroit scored all of its runs in the fourth inning which was highlighted by a two-run homer by Zach McKinstry. Keider Montero will get the start in this opener with a 1-1 record and 5.28 ERA.

San Francisco is coming off a series win against the Washington Nationals, winning the rubber match on Sunday 3-2. Robbie Ray is pitching lights out, improving to 7-0 and going six innings while only giving up three hits and one run while striking out seven. Sam Huff hit a homer and the Giants narrowly held on with the Nationals scoring one in the ninth. Hayden Birdsong will start for San Francisco on Monday. He is 2-0 with a 1.91 ERA.
