Mike Yastrzemski’s two-run homer in the 10th inning on Wednesday lifted the Giants to an 8-6 win over the visiting Cincinnati Reds to avoid a sweep. San Francisco battled back from an early 5-0 deficit, tying the game 6-6 on Wilmer Flores’ solo shot in the eighth. Jung Hoo Lee was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Flores was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. The Giant bullpen delivered 4.1 scoreless innings in relief of starter Justin Verlander, who gave up six runs — five earned — in 5.2 frames with nine strikeouts.

New York avoided a late meltdown in its 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. Ben Rice put the Yankees up 2-0 with a seventh-inning home run and Aaron Judge singled in two runs in the top of the ninth that proved crucial as closer Devin Williams gave up three runs in a non-save situation. Mark Leiter Jr. came on to earn a save by getting the final out.

Struggling right-hander Marcus Stroman gets the ball for New York in the series opener. In two starts, he’s surrendered seven runs in 8.2 innings. Left-hander Robbie Ray is off to a solid start for the Giants as he’s won both of his first two starts with a 3.18 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 11.1 innings.
