The Houston Astros began the middle series of a nine-game road trip with a win over the Oakland Athletics on Monday. They’ll have a chance to lock up the series win on Tuesday.
The Astros are currently in the middle of what will end up being a nine-game road trip, with the first six coming against AL West opponents. They dropped the first two against Seattle over the weekend but came back with a 2-1 win on Sunday. On Monday, they followed that up by starting their series against the Oakland Athletics with a 5-1 victory. If the ‘Stros can grab another win on Tuesday, they’ll lock up the series win.

With Tuesday’s win, the Astros improved to 31-18. That’s good for No. 1 in the AL West, four games ahead of the Los Angeles Angels.
The Astros’ latest win was powered by two more home runs from left fielder Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez now has 14 home runs on the season and is tied with Mookie Betts for the second-most in the league heading into Tuesday’s games.
Houston’s bullpen will be fresh for this one after Framber Valdez went all nine innings on Monday. Valdez picked up his fifth win of the year with that effort while allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
Righty Cristian Javier will be tasked with following that effort for the Astros on Tuesday. He’ll be opposed by righty Frankie Montas of the Athletics. Montas is coming off of one of his best starts of the year, allowing one run on four hits while striking out 11 hitters in seven innings against the Angels on Thursday.
