Shohei Ohtani hit a lead-off home run for the fifth time this year as the Dodgers sauntered to a 7-2 win when the two teams met for the first time this season on Monday, having also managed the feat in defeat to the New York Mets in the previous game. Dave Roberts’ men hope to tie the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies on a league-leading 34 wins, while Cleveland sits second in the AL Central as it hopes to close the gap on Detroit.

Monday’s win in Ohio was much-needed for the Dodgers after losing the last two of their three visits to the Mets over the weekend.

And who else but their boundary-breaking $700 million man to lead the charge on what turned out to be a resurgent performance at Progressive Field before LA prepares to wrap up the month against the New York Yankees.

Ohtani’s immediate homer set the tone for what turned out to be a great night for the Dodgers and pushed the Japanese sensation clear with a league-leading 19th HR of the campaign so far:

That feat took Los Angeles’ talisman one home run above Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber and Yankees star man Aaron Judge, each of whom remain on 18 for the season.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic, however, as Cleveland’s José Ramírez extended his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games thanks to a pair of doubles. 

The Guardians’ third baseman now has the fourth-most doubles in Cleveland’s history (376) after climbing above Joe Sewell and is batting .387 with 12 extra-base hits and 11 RBIs during that span.

He’ll be hoping to play a part in converting some of those figures into a win as the Guardians seek to stop a slide of back-to-back home defeats.
