Rivalry weekend continues when the San Diego Padres host the Seattle Mariners for Game 2 of this Vedder Cup series on Saturday.

The Seattle Mariners go for the series win on the road tonight when they take on the San Diego Padres for Game 2 on Saturday. Seattle looks to hold down its first place spot in the AL West with Houston and Texas only 1.5 games back of the Mariners. Winning the opener 5-1 was a nice bounce back for Seattle after losing its last series against the New York Yankees. The Padres are still feeling good as they lost the first game of their last series against the Los Angeles Angels and ended winning the series.

San Diego is only a game back of the NL West leading Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres are also nicely favored to tie this series tonight with a -175 line in their favor. This series might not seem like an immediate rivalry on paper but these clubs share a spring training venue in Peoria, AZ. It is called the Vedder Cup in 2011 after legendary frontman Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. Vedder grew up in San Diego and moved to Seattle to start his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career.

The opener didn’t start off very well for the Padres when J.P. Crawford took Stephen Kolek’s first pitch deep. Rowdy Tellez and Cal Raleigh both joined in on the fun each hitting a two-run shot to give Seattle starter Logan Evans all the run support he would need. The righty improved to 2-1 after going six innings giving up seven hits but no runs. The Padres would only get one more hit off the Seattle bullpen which was a double from Jake Cronenworth in the ninth inning for San Diego’s lone run of the game.

The Padres have a great chance tying this series tonight by starting Nick Pivetta. The righty is 5-2 with a 3.05 ERA. The Mariners are starting righty Emerson Hancock who is 1-2 with a 6.91 ERA.
