The Athletics have fallen to 5-8 after closing out their last series against the San Diego Padres. They are tied for last place in the AL West with the Seattle Mariners. They avoided the sweep in the last series, winning the middle game 10-4 at home. Tyler Soderstrom has been the best at the plate for the A’s this season with six home runs and 10 RBIs while batting .354.

The visiting New York team will put starting pitcher Griffin Canning on the mound in the first game. Canning is 0-1 this season with a 2.79 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 9.2 innings. The right-hander went 4.0 innings in a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

JP Sears will get his third start of the season on Friday, opening this series for the Athletics. The left-hander is 1-1 in his first two starts with a 3.46 ERA and nine strikeouts in 13.0 innings. He went 6.1 innings in his last start which was his win, 7-4 against the Colorado Rockies. He allowed three earned runs on xis hits with two strikeouts.
