The St. Louis Cardinals host the New York Mets Friday to start this weekend series which will be the last of the season between these clubs.

The New York Mets try to avoid a three-game losing streak when they start this weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The good news for New York is that it still is in first place in the NL East sitting three games above the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets will also be the -120 favorites in the opener tonight. The Cardinals are going to be a tough out at home with a 10-5 record. But the Mets have dominated against St. Louis so far this season coming into this series with a perfect 4-0 record. These two played in a four-game series nearly two weeks ago that New York swept at home. This is the final series of the season between the Mets and Cardinals.

After winning the opener, the Mets lost the last two games against the Arizona Diamondbacks to drop the series. New York lost the rubber match on Thursday 4-2 even though Juan Soto hit his first homers at Citi Field as a member of the Mets. Soto hit two homers but that is all the offense New York could muster all afternoon. It was New York’s first series loss at home this season. Zac Gallen was just too much for the Diamondbacks only giving up two hits and one run in six innings. Kodai Senga didn’t pitch poorly for the Mets only giving up one run in four innings but he still got the loss. Clay Holmes will get the start for New York tonight with a 3-1 record and 2.64 ERA.

The Cardinals looked primed to take their last series after winning a double header on Wednesday. But they came out flat on Thursday in the series finale against the Cincinnati Reds in the four-game set. St. Louis lost 9-1 to split the series 2-2. The Cardinals were only able to muster three hits and only scored in the third on a Nolan Arenado infield single. Cincinnati would go on to score seven unanswered runs. The Cardinals hope to get better starting pitching in this opener when Sonny Gray will take the mound. The righty is 3-0 after the first month of the season with a 3.60 ERA.
