Mets look to remain in Wild Card race as their 10-game road trip begins against the division leading Tigers

Losers of three of their last four games, the New York Mets set out on a pivotal 10-game road trip on Monday afternoon as they look to bolster their playoff resume in a holiday matinee against the Detroit Tigers. Leading the American League Central Division by 9.5 games, the Tigers rebounded from a mid-week sweep to close out their roadtrip with a series win over Kansas City and now turn their attention to closing out their first division title in more than a decade with newly acquired right-hander Charlie Morton (9-10, 5.25 ERA) on the mound for his sixth start since joining Detroit at the trade deadline at the end of July.

Mets first baseman Pete Alonso is second in Major League Baseball with his team leading 110 RBIs this season and comes into Monday off a blistering August where the 30-year-old Tampa, Florida native hit .300 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs. Alonso, in his seventh season in New York, has hit 30 or more home runs in each of his last five seasons and passed Darryl Strawberry for the most home runs in club history. A five-time All-Star, Alonso was the National League rookie of the year in 2019 hitting a career high 53 homers and drove in 120 runs.

The Mets will start veteran southpaw Sean Manaea (1-2, 5.01 ERA) in search of his first win since July 23 after missing the first three and a half months of the year with an oblique injury. In his career, Manaea is 3-2 with a 3.35 ERA against Detroit but is winless against the Tigers in his last three outings.
