After firing manager, the Baltimore Orioles try to end a five-game losing streak in this finale against the Washington Nationals.

The Beltway Series still feels a bit different now as the Baltimore Orioles host the Washington Nationals on Sunday afternoon for the final game these two will play this season. That is because the Orioles are fresh off firing their manager Brandon Hyde after a disappointing 15-28 start. No one in the baseball world had that on their bingo card coming into this season after Baltimore was coming off back-to-back postseason appearances under Hyde. The former O’s skipper is the third to be let go this season after Bud Black (Colorado) and Derek Shelton (Pittsburgh). The move is particularly disappointing since Hyde was there from the outset of this rebuild for the Orioles and winning Manager of the Year in 2023. Baltimore doesn’t have any time to wallow though as it is trying to avoid getting swept for the second series in a row.

While the opener was close with Washington winning 4-3, the Nationals offense went off in Game 2 in a 10-6 final to win the series after Baltimore let go of Hyde. The Nats are now up 4-1 in the season series going into this final game of the year against their regional rival. The Nationals didn’t go easy from the get-go on Baltimore scoring six runs in the first inning. Washington was fueled by Luis Garcia Jr. who had two RBIs, with a single in the first and a double in the second. Nationals starter Jake Irvin was delivered a strong outing going 6.1 innings and just two runs. Baltimore’s starter Kyle Gibson couldn’t get out of the first inning getting just two outs while giving up all six runs.

The Orioles will try to walk out of this series with some good news when they start Zach Eflin. Baltimore will have a good chance to salvage a win as Eflin is 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA. The Nationals will counter with Michael Soroka who is looking for his first victory of the season with a 0-2 record and a 6.43 ERA. The Orioles are the favorites in this finale with a -175 line.
