The Washington Nationals will take the field again on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for the second game of a three-game series against National League East rivals the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies took the 1-0 lead in the series on Tuesday after a wild finish to a back-and-forth game. For the majority of the contest, it looked like Philadelphia was in control. After Kyle Schwarber and Johan Rojas’ home runs in the first three innings the team went up 3-0. It ended up taking a 5-2 lead into the ninth inning.

That is when things took a dramatic turn. In the top of the last inning, James Wood doubled to center, scoring CJ Abrams to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Just a few at-bats after that, Nathaniel Lowe blasted a three-run home run to make it 6-3 for the Nationals. At the bottom of the same inning, Kyle Finnegan took the mound for Washington and inevitably lost the game. Rojas hit a sacrifice fly RBI to tie the game, followed by Bryson Stott scoring on a wild pitch from Finnegan to end the game 7-6.

Washington will start the middle game of this series with Jake Irvin on the mound. The right-hander is 2-0 in his 2025 campaign with a 3.19 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 36.2 innings pitched. He diced up the New York Mets in his last start, allowing just one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts across 7.1 total innings.

Christopher Sanchez will take the mound for Philadelphia in this game. The left-hander is 2-1 this season with a 3.42 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 26.1 innings pitched. He gave up two earned runs on four hits in just two innings against the New York Mets in his last start, striking out two batters in the process.
