Off consecutive series wins, the Tigers wrap up their 10-game home stand in a weekend series against the Orioles.

After taking two of three games from the Padres mid-week, the Detroit Tigers return to Comerica Park on Friday night for their series opener against the struggling Baltimore Orioles who have lost four of their last six games. The Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak with a win Thursday night against the Nationals but have failed to score more than three runs in five of their last six games as they now face one of the hottest starting rotations in baseball as Detroit sends 27-year-old right-hander Casey Mize (3-1, 2.22 ERA) to the mound in search of his fourth win in five starts.

In his fifth year with the Tigers, Casey Mize is off to his best start to any season having already surpassed his win total from the last three seasons combined after battling through arm issues that sidelined him for all but two starts in 2022 and the entirety of the 2023 campaign. Mize, the number one overall selection in the 2018 MLB Draft, has allowed one earned run or less in his three of his first four starts and has only surrendered 16 hits over 24.1 innings of work.

The Orioles will start rookie right-hander Brandon Young (0-0, 6.75 ERA) in just his second career start after striking out three batters over four innings in Saturday’s 9-5 win over Cincinnati. Young, who was called up from Triple-A Norfolk when Zach Eflin went on the injured list, was the Orioles minor league pitcher of the year in 2024 going 5-4 with a 3.44 ERA over 89 innings in Norfolk.

Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson leads the team in total bases, home runs, RBIs and doubles despite being held without a hit in his last two outings.

Detroit has won four of the last six meetings in this series winning both three-game sets against the Orioles in 2024.
