Trizona Diamondbacks return to play with a divisional matchup this weekend against the San Diego Padres starting on Friday night.
The National League West has been one of the most competitive divisions in baseball through the first two-plus months of the 2025 season. Two teams from that division will square off Friday night in the first game of a three-game weekend series with the San Diego Padres (38-28) visiting the Arizona Diamondbacks (34-34) at Chase Field. This will be the first meeting of the year between the Padres and Diamondbacks. The last two years the season series has been close – the Padres won it 7-6 last year, with the Diamondbacks winning it 7-6 the year before that.

The Padres come into this game one game back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West. The Padres hosted the Dodgers earlier this week and dropped two of three games, but have still won six of their last 10.
Meanwhile the Diamondbacks are working their way back into the conversation in the division. They swept the Seattle Mariners earlier this week at home, and now have won seven of their last 10 games to get back near .500. They enter this weekend six and a half games back in the divisional standings.
It will be a pair of righty starters throwing for the teams in this matchup. Ryne Nelson will get the ball for the Diamondbacks, opposite Stephen Kolek for the Padres.
