Emmet Sheehan returns from Tommy John surgery on Wednesday and will make his first start for the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2023 against the San Diego Padres.

The late window of Wednesday’s MLB slate includes a divisional matchup, with the San Diego Padres (39-33) visiting the Los Angeles Dodgers (45-29) in National League West action. It’s a big night for the Dodgers – and in particular starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan. The righty will be making his first Major League appearance since 2023, after missing last season and the start of this year due to Tommy John surgery and the related recovery process.

A sixth-round pick in 2021 out of Boston College, Sheehan’s last season was his rookie year. He went 4-1 in 13 games with 11 starts, posting a 4.92 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 60.1 innings. He began this year with four rehab assignments, with a 3.97 ERA over 11.1 innings.

Sheehan will be opposed by Padres righty Stephen Kolek in this one. Kolek is in his first season in the starting rotation after spending his rookie year last year in the bullpen. In eight appearances, all starts, he’s 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 46.1 innings.

In this game the Dodgers are looking to pick up their fifth win in a row. They’d also clinch a series win over the Padres, having won Monday 6-3 and Tuesday 8-6 to begin this four-game set. Center fielder Andy Pages led the way on Tuesday night, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.
