Robbie Ray looks to continue his resurgent spring for the San Francisco Giants against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday
Robbie Ray, the American League Cy Young winner in 2021, is putting together a terrific spring for the San Francisco Giants (16-5) and takes the mound on Tuesday night when a split-squad from the Giants takes on the San Diego Padres (9-15) at Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ray has struck out 17 batters in just 9.1 innings in Arizona while posting a 1.93 ERA in three starts. He was limited to just seven appearances in 2024 while coming back from Tommy John surgery. San Diego ace Yu Darvish, meanwhile, has paused his preparation for the season because of fatigue and may not be available for his first start.

San Francisco center fielder Jung Hoo Lee, who missed most of last season after shoulder surgery, will undergo an MRI on his back. He signed a six-year, $113 million contract in December 2023. The Giants landed one of the top free agents in the offseason, signing shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year deal, and brought in right-hander Justin Verlander on a one-year pact.
The Padres went to the NLDS and pushed the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers to a decisive fifth game. Their big addition over the winter was right-hander Nick Pivetta on a four-year contract. They also brought in outfielders Jason Heyward and Connor Joe along with left-hander Kyle Hart on one-year deals.
Right-hander Stephen Kolek takes the ball for San Diego on Tuesday night. He’s allowed one run in nine innings over three Cactus League outings. Yuli Gurriel, in camp on a minor-league deal, doubled and homered on Monday, driving in four runs in San Diego’s 14-8 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Verlander struck out six in five scoreless innings for the Giants in a 3-0 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday.
