The Pittsburgh Pirates host the San Diego Padres on Friday to start this weekend series.

The San Diego Padres look for their third win in a row when they travel to Pittsburgh to start a new series with the Pirates on Friday. The Padres are coming off a two-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants which was a nice bounce back after getting swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in their previous series. The Pirates are trying to turn it around losing four of their last five games. Pittsburgh is eight games below .500 while the Padres are eight games above that mark. The Padres are starting this series with a day off while the Pirates are playing on back-to-back days. The Padres will be the -150 favorites in the opener tonight.

The Padres are coming off a 5-3 win against the Giants to complete the sweep on Wednesday. Elias Diaz homered twice and scored twice and Fernando Tatis kept the offense rolling with three hits of his own. The Giants didn’t score until the sixth inning when San Diego was already up 4-0. Michael King walked away with the win to improve to 4-1 and now has a stellar 2.09 ERA after only giving up one run on three hits. Dylan Cease will try to replicate that performance getting the start on Friday night. The righty is trying to improve on his 1-2 record with a 5.76 ERA.

The Pirates are coming off a rubber match finale against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday losing 8-3 to drop the series. Pittsburgh started off hot with Bryan Reynolds hitting a homer in the first and then Oneil Cruz hit an RBI double to put the Pirates up 2-0. But the Cubs scored five in a row to effectively end the game as they took Paul Skenes deep three separate times. The Pittsburgh ace was saddled with the loss going five innings and giving up three runs. The Pirates will try to bounce back from the series loss tonight by starting Mitch Keller. The righty has a 1-2 record with a 3.97 ERA.
