The Cincinnati Reds look to win back-to-back series when they host the San Diego Padres starting on Friday.

The Cincinnati Reds host the San Diego Padres for their first series starting on Friday night. These two won’t play again until September in San Diego. The Padres will go for their third win in a row, as they try to catch up to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West race. Coming into this game, San Diego is six games back, going into this series. The Padres are hot right now, winning four of their last five games. The Reds are also six games back in their division race, with the Chicago Cubs holding the top spot in the NL Central. Cincinnati is trying to build off a strong series win against the New York Yankees. Only two wins separate these clubs in the win column, so this should be a very close series on paper. Odds makers would seemingly agree by giving the Padres the -135 line to win the opener.

The Padres are coming off a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in their rubber match to end their series on Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. After dropping the opener, San Diego came back and won the final two games and the series. Nick Pivetta put the series on his shoulders, improving to 8-2, after going seven scoreless innings while only giving up three hits against Washington. On top of that, Pivetta struck out 10 Nationals. It wasn’t fancy, but San Diego got all the run support it would need with an RBI single from Luis Arraez in the second inning. San Diego will try to stay hot when they start Dylan Cease on Friday night, who is 3-6 with a 4.43 ERA.

The Reds looked good for the first two games of their series against the Yankees, but they couldn’t secure the sweep on Wednesday, losing 7-1. Max Fried was just too much on the mound, becoming the first pitcher in the majors to reach 10 innings. Fried dominated for seven innings, while only giving up four hits and striking out seven. The Reds scored an unearned run with Spencer Steer collecting an infield single in the fourth. Cincinnati’s three-game winning streak ended, but it will try to bounce back by starting Nick Martinez for the opener. The righty is 4-8 with a 4.40 ERA.
