Division leading Tigers look to win second straight series as the Padres swing into Motown

After plating six runs in the first three innings of Monday’s win over the San Diego Padres, the Detroit Tigers have now won four of their last five games and are a win away from securing their second consecutive series win and sixth series victory of the young season as they return to Comerica Park on Tuesday night for the second game of their three-game series. The Tigers will send veteran right-hander Jack Flaherty (1-1, 2.53 ERA) to the mound in search of his first win in his last three starts hoping for some run support as Detroit has only plated a total of three runs in his last two starts.

The Paders will counter with their own veteran right-hander Nick Pivetta (3-1, 1.57 ERA) who has been dominant in his last two outings striking out 16 batters over 13 innings allowing just one earned run but has yet to win a start away from Petco Park so far this season. Pivetta, in his first season with San Diego, is halfway to his 2024 win total where he struggled through a six-win campaign in 27 starts with Boston after posting consecutive 10-win seasons. In his career, Pivetta is 1-2 with a 3.15 ERA in four career outings against the Tigers with both losses coming last season with the Red Sox.

Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is off to an electric start to the 2025 campaign ranking in the top six in the league with his team leading seven home runs and 21 RBIs through his first 23 games. Torkelson, the number one overall selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, belted 31 home runs in his second season in the bigs in 2023 but saw his production fall off last year hitting .219 and driving in only 37 runs in 92 games while being sent down to Triple-A Toledo to work on his mechanics.

The series is split 5-5 over the last 10 meetings with Detroit winning each of the last two overall. Dating back to July of 2022, the Tigers hold a narrow 4-3 series lead against the Padres at home with three of the four wins coming by two or more runs.
