The Chicago White Sox try to rebound from an MLB-record 121 losses when they host the San Diego Padres on Wednesday in spring training action.

The Chicago White Sox (0-4) made the wrong type of history last season, setting a new Major League record with 121 losses. The White Sox are set to travel the road back from ignominy this season, but are winless so far in the Cactus League. On Wednesday, they host the San Diego Padres (2-3) at Camelback Ranch-Glendale in Phoenix. San Diego was a wild card team in 2024 and took the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers to a decisive fifth game in the National League Division Series last October.

The Padres made a splash in free agency when they signed right-hander Nick Pivetta to a four-year deal, while also adding outfielders Jason Heyward and Connor Joe and starter Kyle Hart on one-year deals. Catcher Martin Maldonado and first baseman Yuli Gurriel are in camp on minor league deals as well. But San Diego lost outfielder Jurickson Profar, reliever Tanner Scott and starter Martín Pérez in free agency, while infielder Ha-Seong Kim declined his option.

Pérez came to Chicago on a one-year deal, along with starter Bryse Wilson and outfielders Michael A. Taylor, Mike Tauchman and Austin Slater. Joey Gallo, a former All-Star, is in camp on a minor league contract, while the team added four prospects — starter Wikelman Gonzalez, catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery and infielder Chase Meidroth — when they traded staff ace Garrett Crochet to the Boston Red Sox.

Right-hander Sean Burke is set to make his spring debut for the White Sox on Wednesday, while fellow righty Ryan Bergert makes his second start of the spring for San Diego after throwing a scoreless inning on Friday. The Padres lost to the Los Angeles Angels 2-1 on Tuesday, while Chicago gave up eight runs in the eighth inning of its 14-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
