While the Phillies may have picked up the win yesterday, they suffered a loss along the way. Bryce Harper suffered a fractured thumb in the fourth inning when he was hit by a Blake Snell fastball.
Perhaps it was seeing one of their teammates go down with an injury that propelled the Phillies because in the fifth, things started moving in the right direction for them. J.T. Realmuto hit a solo shot to put the Phils on the board. Yairo Muñoz followed with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0. Kyle Schwarber brought home the third run of the game with an RBI single.
Jorge Alfaro hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Padres within one run of the Phillies, but that’s as close as they would come. Alec Bohm extended the lead back to two in the top of the sixth with an RBI double and that was enough to secure the win.
With an unknown timetable on Harper’s injury, the Phillies need to find a solution quickly if they still want a chance at the playoffs in the fall.
