The Pittsburgh Pirates begin a four-game series with the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon. The Pirates open their season in the state of Florida with seven games against the Marlins and Tampa Bay Rays. They Pirates will turn to Paul Skenes in the opener on Thursday. Skenes was great in his first season after getting called up early in the year. He went 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA and it helped him earn the NL Rookie of the Year. He also was selected to the All-Star game and was the starter for the National League. He struck out 170 and walked just 32 batters in 399 innings pitched. He has already ascended up to one of the best pitchers in the MLB and is looking to be just as good this year as the Pirates look to compete for a playoff spot.

The Marlins, though, are looking to hand Skenes a loss in his first start of the season as they try and get a win in their season opener.

The Marlins will turn to Sandy Alcantara in the opener. Alcantara missed all of the 2024 season thanks to undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Alcantara was one of the best pitchers in the NL in 2022 as he went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA. He struggled a bit in 2023 going 7-12 with a 4.14 ERA.

The Marlins are hoping he can find his form again as they try and climb out of the cellar in the loaded NL East.
