Andrew Heaney will battle against Ranger Suarez on the mound as the Pirates take on the Phillies in the first game of the season on Friday.

On Friday, the Pittsburgh Pirates will take the field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the first game of a three-game series against in-state rival Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. This will be the first game of this series between these teams. The Pirates are heading on the road with just a 15-29 record overall this season. They are the last-placed team in the NL Central, 5.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds and 10 games behind the divisional-leading Chicago Cubs. They are one of just five teams in the MLB with a double-digit deficit in their division.

The Phillies, on the other hand, are 25-18, staying home for their second straight series. They are 14-8 at Citizens Bank Park this season and 11-10 on the road. They are 2.5 games behind the New York Mets after losing two of three games against the St. Louis Cardinals in their last series earlier this week.

Andrew Heaney will take the mound for Pittsburgh in this series-opening game. The left-hander is looking for his record-evening third win of the season with a 3.15 ERA and 36 strikeouts through 45.2 innings. After giving up four earned runs in two straight starts, he brought it down against the Atlanta Braves with only two earned runs on four hits; however, he had just two strikeouts.

Philadelphia will give the ball back to Ranger Suarez to start the game on the mound. The left-hander will make his third start of the season with one win already under his belt. He had a 5.91 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. After tossing seven earned runs in 3.2 innings in his first start back from injury, he threw 7.0 scoreless innings against the Cleveland Guardians in his last start.
