Paul Skenes and the Pirates will face Mick Abel and the Phillies in the last game of this weekend series on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates will take the field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for the last game of a three-game series against their in-state rival Philadelphia Phillies, at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies will be looking for another three-game sweep after winning the first two games of the series on Friday and Saturday. They took the first game of the season between these two teams 8-4, on the back of a gem from Ranger Suarez and his second win of the year. Both Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos led the team with two RBIs each, while Harper went 3-for-4 on the night.

Yesterday, Zack Wheeler pitched an ace and advanced to 5-1. He threw 6.0 scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Bryson Stott had himself a night, going 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs, a home run, and three RBIs. Harper and Kyle Schwarber had the other two RBIs in Philadelphia’s 5-2 win in the second game.

The Pirates will look to avoid the sweep with their ace pitcher, Paul Skenes, taking the mound to start the game. The right-hander is 3-4 this season with a 2.63 ERA and 53 strikeouts over 54.2 innings. His last game ended in a 4-3 loss, but he threw 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts.

Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola hit the injured list this week, so the team called up star prospect pitcher Mick Abel from AAA, and he will get the spot start in this game, making his MLB debut. In Lehigh Valley, Abel is 5-2 in his 2025 campaign with a 2.53 ERA, his lowest of his career. He has 51 strikeouts in 46.1 innings pitched for the Iron Pigs.
