After taking two of three games from the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend, the St. Louis Cardinals have a narrow lead in the National League Central. They look to build on that lead this week when they face another NL Central foe in the Pittsburgh Pirates for four games starting on Monday.

The Cardinals wins over the weekend included a 2-0 shutout win and a narrow 5-4 victory. With those wins, the Redbirds’ record now sits at 34-27 on the season, which has them 0.5 games up on the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the division.
Third baseman Nolan Arenado has come on strong the last few weeks for the Cardinals. Over his last 13 games, he’s hitting .314 with two home runs and nine RBIs.
Arenado and the Cardinals will face a Pirates team that is 24-34 on the season. The Pirates were swept by the Atlanta Braves over the weekend.
St. Louis righty Zack Thompson will make his first career start and second career appearance on Monday against the Pirates. In his Major League debut, the 2019 first-round pick allowed one earned run in four innings and picked up a save against the Cubs.
He’ll be countered by righty Mitch Keller of the Pirates. Keller allowed just one run on four hits over six innings in his last start, which came against the Detroit Tigers.
