Winless on the road trip, the Rangers begin a three-game series in D.C. against the Nationals

After dropping two of three games to the Cubs mid-week, the Washington Nationals continue their six-game home stand on Friday night as they begin a three-game weekend series at Nationals Park against the visiting Texas Rangers in an interleague matchup. The Rangers come into the weekend on a three-game skid that saw them get swept in Tampa Bay as they roll through a nine-game road trip, having lost eight of their last nine games away from Arlington. Texas will turn to veteran left-hander Patrick Corbin (3-4, 3.71 ERA) who has been let down by his offense as the Rangers have combined to score just five runs in his has three starts.

Nationals left fielder James Wood leads the team in virtually every offensive category hitting .278 and ranking in the top 10 in Major League Baseball in home runs and RBIs and is 11th with a .925 OPS. Wood, in his second season in the majors, has already surpassed his home run and RBI totals from his rookie campaign where he appeared in 79 games for Washington a year ago. The 22-year-old Maryland native was a second-round selection by the Padres in 2021 and was acquired by Washington in the mega deal that sent Juan Soto to San Diego in August of 2022.

The Nationals will start righty Michael Soroka (2-3, 5.81 ERA) who has won two of his last three starts despite allowing three or more earned runs in each of those three outings. Soroka won a career-high 13 games with Atlanta in 2019 but saw his tenure with the Braves end after missing significant time with an injured ACL and Achilles that derailed three consecutive campaigns from 2020-2022.

Washington leads the series 5-4 since June of 2022 including winning two of three in their last meeting in the nation’s capital back in July of 2023.
