Rangers aims for second straight Sunday victory as they face the Tigers in a getaway day rubber game

After breaking a three-game losing streak on Saturday, the Texas Rangers look for jus their second winning streak since mid-April as the conclude their six-game road trip on Sunday afternoon as take on the division leading Detroit Tigers in the rubber match of their three-game weekend series. The Rangers will send veteran Nathan Eovaldi (3-2, 2.03 ERA) to the mound in search of his third win in his last four starts while the Tigers will start 25-year-old Reese Olson (4-2, 3.03 ERA) who has allowed a total of just three earned runs over his last four starts while picking up wins in three of those four outings.

The Tigers lead all of Major League Baseball with a +77 run differential thanks in large part to their first baseman Spencer Torkelson sparking the offense with 21 extra base hits and a team leading 32 runs batted in through his first 40 games. Torkelson, the number one overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, belted a career high 31 homers in 2023 but battled with mechanical issues throughout 2024 being sent down to Triple-A Toldeo but returning in time to help the Tigers make their first playoff appearance in a decade. The 25-year-old Petaluma, California native sits nine RBIs away from 200 over his four-year career.

Rangers third baseman Josh Smith ranks 14th in MLB hitting .315 this season and comes into Sunday on a six-game hitting streak after belting a solo home run in Saturday’s 10-3 road win. Smith posted career highs in runs, hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs and steals in 2024 and is on pace for his best batting average season in the majors.

The series is split 10-10 since August of 2022 with Texas winning six of nine in Detroit during that span.
