The Cleveland Guardians host the Boston Red Sox for the first time this season, starting a new series on Friday

The Boston Red Sox try to avoid losing three games in a row when they travel to start a new series against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday night. The Guardians are coming off a series win against the New York Yankees but they lost the opportunity at the sweep and their five-game winning streak came to an end. Cleveland has a chance to get back up into first place today though with a win and a Detroit loss a the Guardians are only a game back of the top spot in the AL Central. Odds makers are expecting this opening game to be close with the Red Sox holding the slight line advantage at -115. Both teams have 14 wins but Cleveland is going to be a tough out tonight with a 7-2 record at home.

The Red Sox lost their last two games of their series against the Seattle Mariners concluding with a 4-3 loss on Thursday. Bryan Woo was just too much against Boston as the Mariners starter only gave up three hits. Boston’s starter Garrett Crochet got roughed up early giving up four runs in the first two innings. Boston will try to rebound by starting Tanner Houck but the righty is looking for a bit of a turnaround of his own. Houck is 0-2 with a 7.66 ERA after his last start against the Chicago White Sox who have only won five games. He did go six innings while only giving up two runs on three hits but was tabbed with the no decision.

The Guardians lost to the New York Yankees 5-1 on Wednesday to drop the finale and miss the sweep. Carlos Rodon dominated in seven innings not giving up any earned runs only giving up four hits. The Guardians only scored in the first inning and it came on a fielding error. Aaron Judge went 2-for-4 and raised his batting average to .415 as Cleveland starter Luis Ortiz struggled giving up four runs in 4.1 innings but he did strike out eight.
