The Boston Red Sox go for the series win on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 on Saturday night. Boston is 3-1 in Tampa Bay this season, and leads this season series 9-2 after beating the Rays in the opener 11-7 in the opener on Friday. This is the final series of the season between these AL East foes. The Red Sox need these games, as they are still making a run for the AL Wild Card. Both the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners are tied with the same record at 84-69. That means that they are tied for the AL West division race and for the second AL Wild Card spot. The Red Sox sit at 84-70 going into the final weekend of summer. They technically hold the third and final AL Wild Card spot, but are only a half-game behind the Astros and Mariners. There is little time to relax though, because the Cleveland Guardians are just two games back of Boston for that last Wild Card spot. The Rays have been eliminated from the playoffs after the opening loss to Boston. After winning the first four games of September, Tampa Bay has only won four games since. Tampa Bay is a slight -115 favorite to tie this series tonight.

The Rays scored a run in each of the first three innings of the opener, but it wasn’t enough to be eliminated from back-to-back postseasons after playing October baseball from 2019-2023. Boston scored nine runs in the seventh and eighth innings. That included scoring seven in the eighth. That inning was highlighted by a go-ahead two-run homer by Jarren Duran. Garrett Crochet settled down after the third inning to get the win. After going six innings and striking out nine, Crochet improved to 17-5 which is fifth in the majors.

Tampa Bay will have a good shot at tying this series by starting Adrian Houser, who is 8-4 with a 3.11 ERA. Boston will counter by starting Kyle Harrison, who is 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA. Harrison was previously with San Francisco and was acquired by Boston in September. He made his Red Sox debut against the Athletics where he went three innings of scoreless ball. Expect a longer start tonight.
