The Royals go for their second straight win on Monday afternoon when they host the Reds

The Kansas City Royals begin a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday afternoon. The Royals avoided a sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins when they won 2-1 in 10 innings on Sunday. Maikel Garcia had a two-out go-ahead single in the top of the 10th and the Royals held on to snap a two-game losing streak. The win pushed their record to 29-25 on the season and has them in fourth place in the AL Central. They are a game back of both the Twins and Cleveland Guardians and five games back of the first-place Detroit Tigers. They will get a shot at the Tigers at the end of the week, but first must deal with the Reds. In the opener the Royals will send Michael Lorenzen to the mound. Lorenzen comes into Monday 3-5 with a 3.77 ERA. The Royals have lost his last two starts after winning four in a row. He lasted just four and two-thirds innings in his last outing against the San Francisco Giants. He gave up three runs on seven hits in the loss.

The Reds will counter with Nick Martinez as they try to bounce back from a disappointing series loss to the Chicago Cubs.

The Reds led the first and last games by at least four runs, but lost both of them. They did win the middle game, but could have picked up a sweep of the first-place Cubs.

Martinez will take the mound on Monday and he comes into the day 2-5 with a 3.43 ERA. He pitched well in his last game as he only gave up one run in six innings, but the Reds didn’t score and he took the loss.

It was the Reds’ third loss in his last four starts and they are just 2-8 when Martinez starts on the mound this season.
