Royals open six-game road trip in St. Louis as the I-70 Series cross-state clash against the Cardinals begins

Having lost three consecutive series and having alternated wins and losses over their last five games, the Kansas City Royals look to snap out of their slump on Tuesday as they head east on I-70 to take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the first game of a three-game mid-week series at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals have likewise alternated wins and losses over their last four outings, but have won six of their last nine games, winning a pair of three-game series over Arizona and Baltimore during that span. Veteran right-hander Michael Lorenzen (3-6, 4.33 ERA) looks for his first win since late-April as he takes the mound for Kansas City against fourth-year righty Andre Pallante (4-3, 4.23 ERA), who has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last four starts.

Despite being held without a hit in each of his last two games, Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan is ranked eighth in Major League Baseball, hitting a team-high .323 this season and is closing in on his third 100-hit season in the last four years. Donovan, who was a Gold Glove Award winner in his rookie campaign in 2022, helping the Cardinals reach the playoffs, hit a career high 14 home runs and drove in 74 runs in 2024. The 28-year-old Alabama native leads St. Louis with 100 total bases in 56 games, collecting 22 extra-base hits in 217 at-bats.

Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. leads the team in doubles, triples, RBIs and stolen bases this season after producing a breakout campaign in 2024, earning his first All-Star Team appearance. The 24-year-old took home Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Awards last season, winning his first career batting title, ending the year hitting .332 with 32 homers and 109 runs batted in.

This series is split 7-7 over the last 14 meetings, dating back to May of 2022, with Kansas City winning three of the last four games in St. Louis.
