Kansas City Royals eye another playoff berth in 2025 while the San Francisco Giants look to end string of 3 straight non-winning seasons.

The Kansas City Royals (9-4) had a 30-win turnaround in 2024, leading the team to its first postseason bid since winning the World Series in 2015. The Royals wound up losing to the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. On Saturday, Kansas City heads to Scottsdale Stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona, for a Cactus League encounter with the San Francisco Giants (7-3). Since winning a franchise-record 107 games in 2021, the Giants haven’t had a winning season, finishing 80-82 in 2024, their first season under manager Bob Melvin.

The Royals re-signed right-handers Michael Wacha and Michael Lorenzen over the winter while adding right-hander Carlos Estévez to the bullpen in free agency. In their lone trade, they sent right-hander Brady Singer to the Cincinnati Reds for second baseman Jonathan India and outfielder Joey Wiemer. The club has some dings this spring, with fourth outfielder Dairon Blanco (Achilles), infielder Nick Loftin (illness), closer Carlos Estevez (back) and relievers James McArthur (elbow) and Sam Long (hand) all day-to-day.

San Francisco signed shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year free-agent contract, but the only other significant addition was 42-year-old three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander. The Giants lost left-hander Blake Snell and veterans Mark Canha, Curt Casali and Michael Conforto in free agency and traded reliever Taylor Rogers to the Cincinnati Reds for a prospect. Catcher Tom Murphy (back) remains out and reliever Erik Miller (illness) had been scheduled to return to action on Friday.

The Royals won a rain-shortened 8-2 decision over the Los Angeles Angels in six innings on Friday while San Francisco’s matchup with the Cincinnati Reds was washed out. Right-hander Carson Ragsdale, who fanned four in two scoreless innings on Feb. 24, is set for his first start on Saturday, opposed by Wacha, who struck out four while allowing three runs in two innings on Feb. 26.
