The Philadelphia Phillies (88-60) expanded their lead in the National League East to a season-high 12 games on Friday night and reduced their magic number to clinch the division title to three. The Phillies can clinch as soon as Sunday and look to get closer on Saturday night when they take on the Kansas City Royals (74-74) in the second game of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. However, left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado will miss the rest of the season after he was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a strained left forearm.

Walker Buehler allowed one run over five innings in his Phillies debut on Friday night as Philadelphia stopped the Royals 8-2. Bryce Harper belted a two-run home run in the third inning and Bryson Stott had a two-run shot in the seventh. Seldom-used backup catcher Rafael Marchan finished 2-for-3 and drove in the Phillies’ first run with a second-inning sacrifice fly. Philadelphia ran its winning streak to five games while the New York Mets lost their seventh in a row on Friday night.

Kansas City took an early lead on Maikel Garcia’s RBI single in the first but didn’t score again until a run-scoring groundout by Bobby Witt Jr. in the seventh. Michael Lorenzen was hit hard, allowing six runs on 10 hits in just three-plus innings.

Right-hander Taijuan Walker (4-8) goes to the mound for the Phillies having lost his last three decisions. In 30 appearances and 19 starts, Walker has a 4.03 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 111.2 innings this season. The Royals counter with rookie right-hander Ryan Bergert (1-2), who has posted a 4.17 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in seven starts and 36.2 innings since coming over from the San Diego Padres in a July 31 trade.
