The Kansas City Royals (36-38) entered this week’s series with the Texas Rangers (36-38) looking to bust out of a slump. During the previous week the Royals had gotten swept on a six-game homestand, before departing for six on the road. Fast forward to the end of this series and they’ve started to turn things around. They took the first two games of the set, and will go for the sweep on Thursday afternoon in a getaway day series finale at Globe Life Field.

It’s been a well-rounded effort by the Royals through the first two games. They won the series opener 6-1, then Wednesday’s game 6-3.

In the opener, catcher Salvador Perez led the way offensively with two home runs and four RBIs in a 3-for-4 performance. On the mound, the Royals pitching staff combined to strike out 14 Rangers hitters.

Then on Wednesday, the Royals recovered well after falling down 2-0 in the first inning. Third baseman Maikel Garcia’s three-run home run in the third inning put the team ahead for good, and he finished 3-of-4 with four total runs driven in.

As the Royals go for the sweep they’ll turn to righty Michael Wacha on the mound. Through 14 starts this year Wacha has a 3.38 ERA in 80 innings. Over his last seven starts he has an ERA of 3.24 with at least five strikeouts in each of his last three outings.
