Heading into the holiday weekend with a 12.5 game lead in the American League Central Division, the Detroit Tigers look to rebound after dropping two of three games mid-week against the Nationals as their final road series before the All-Star break begins on Friday night against the Cleveland Guardians who are in the midst of a seven-game losing skid. The Tigers will send Reese Olson (4-3, 2.96 ERA) to the mound for his first start since mid-May hoping to regain his form that saw him allow a combined six earned runs in his last six starts before a finger issue that landed him on the Injured List.

A trio of Tigers hitters were named American League All-Star starters earlier this week with second baseman Gleyber Torres and outfielders Javier Baez and Riley Greene being selected marking the first time since 2007 Detroit had landed three starters in the Midsummer Classic. Greene is having a breakout season leading Detroit in hits, doubles, home runs, RBIs and batting average and comes into the weekend poised to post his third consecutive 100-hit season and is six RBIs away from breaking his career high of 74 set during last year’s playoff run.

The Guardians will counter with third-year right-hander Slade Cecconi (3-3, 3.64 ERA) who has allowed three earned runs or less in each of his last five starts. Cecconi spent two seasons with Arizona throwing a pair of scoreless innings in the Diamondbacks’ postseason run to the National League pennant in 2023 before being dealt to Cleveland in December of 2024.
