The Tigers have now won five of their last six after having a tough start to the second half of the season. The Phillies have now dropped out of first place in the National League East, but they are only 0.5 games back of the New York Mets.

Game 2 came down to a duel between two elite pitchers as expected. Tarik Skubal outlasted Zack Wheeler in a battle of 2025 All Stars. Skubal went seven innings, giving up three runs and striking out 10 to improve to 11-3 on the season. Wheeler pitched very, similarly going six innings, while giving up three runs and striking out 10. Surprisingly, it was Skubal’s first win since June. Javier Baez was clutch on offense for the Tigers, hitting a home run and double to drive in four runs. The Tigers were up 5-0 before the Phillies got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Castellanos and Bryce Harper homered late, but Philadelphia just had too much to overcome to pull off the comeback.

Detroit made a last minute deal with the Baltimore Orioles to get tonight’s starter Charlie Morton. The right-hander is 41 years old, but still has more in the tank. Morton started the season 0-7, but has completely turned it around just in time with a 7-8 record and 5.42 ERA. The Phillies will have the advantage on the mound tonight though by starting Cristopher Sanchez. The lefty is 9-3 with a 2.55 ERA.
