The New York Yankees return home to Tampa Bay when they host the Detroit Tigers on Monday afternoon in this spring training exhibition. The Yankees lost their last two games on the road as they’ll try to avoid a three-game losing streak today. New York barely lost on Sunday 6-5 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday to drop to 8-8. The biggest news out of New York camp this week has been concerns about Gerrit Cole’s pitching elbow. The Yankees’ ace experienced discomfort after a Thursday start in Grapefruit League action against the Minnesota Twins. This is the second year in a row whee Cole has had discomfort in the spring. After winning the 2023 AL Cy Young, Cole was shutdown in March 2024 and did not make his first start until June. The good news is that he went on to have a productive year going 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA and was a strong force in the playoffs. Hopefully he can return to the mound quickly.

The Tigers are coming off a 5-3 win at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday to improve to 7-7 on the spring. Javy Baez came in clutch homering to center for a three-run shot that effectively won the game and put Detroit up for good. This week, the Tigers signed pitcher Jose Urquidy on a one-year, $1 million deal.

It is low-risk, potentially high reward as Urquidy was a standout for the Houston Astros especially in their run up to the World Series title in 2022. Urquidy is coming off his second Tommy John surgery in June. If healthy, he could be a great deep option for this starting rotation.
