The Detroit Tigers (1-0) opened their Grapefruit League schedule with a win on Saturday and play their first road game of the spring on Sunday against the New York Yankees (1-1) at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Detroit brought back veteran right-hander Jack Flaherty on a two-year, $35 million free-agent deal after trading him to the Dodgers at the deadline last season, also adding right-hander Alex Cobb, infielder Gleyber Torres and reliever Tommy Kahnle. The Tigers have reigning AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal at the top of the rotation but outfielder Akil Baddoo will miss the start of the regular season after surgery to repair a broken bone in his right hand.

The Yankees lost Torres and superstar outfielder Juan Soto in free agency but reshaped the pitching staff, most notably adding left-hander Max Fried from the Atlanta Braves on an eight-year contract. Other newcomers include closer Devin Williams in a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers and outfielder Cody Bellinger in a trade with the Chicago Cubs and the Bronx Bombers also signed first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to a one-year deal.

Justice Bigbee capped a comeback from a 6-1 deficit with a walkoff single on Saturday, lifting the Tigers to a 7-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Spencer Jones hit a two-run homer and Alexander Vargas had a solo shot in New York’s 6-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
