Toronto Blue Jays open a 3-game weekend series with the sliding Chicago White Sox at Rogers Centre on Friday night

The Toronto Blue Jays (40-34), unable to complete a sweep on Thursday, open a three-game weekend series on Friday night against the Chicago White Sox (23-52), who come to Rogers Centre in Toronto on an eight-game losing streak. The Jays trail the American League East-leading New York Yankees by three games while Chicago has lost nine of its last 10 and is firmly entrenched in the AL Central cellar while owning the worst road record in baseball at 7-31. Toronto is dealing with injuries in the outfield, with Nathan Lukes, Anthony Santander and Daulton Varsho all in the injured list.

The White Sox dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday to the visiting St. Louis Cardinals, losing the opener 5-4 before going down 8-6 in 10 innings in the nightcap. They led the first game until St. Louis pushed across three runs in the eighth inning. Third baseman Miguel Vargas enters the series slashing .242/.320/.434 with team-highs of 10 home runs and 32 RBI while Luis Robert Jr. has stolen 22 bases in 27 attempts.

The Blue Jays were unable to finish a sweep of the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 9-5 decision. Alejandro Kirk hit a pair of solo home runs and drove in three runs while Jonatan Clase also went deep. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. comes into the series with a .286/.388/.443 slash line while Bo Bichette has 10 homers and 44 RBI. George Springer has also clubbed 10 home runs.

Right-hander Spencer Turnbull (1-0), signed as a free agent on May 5 and recalled on June 9, is set to make his first start of the season for Toronto on Friday night. He has allowed one run on seven hits in 4.1 innings over two relief appearances. Right-hander Davis Martin (2-7) takes the ball for Chicago with a 3.79 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 80.2 innings over 14 appearances and 13 starts.
