The New York Yankees visit Diablos Rojos del México to open a two-game exhibition series on Sunday in a rematch nearly 60 years in the making.
For the first time since Mickey Mantle’s final season in pinstripes, the New York Yankees return to Mexico City on Sunday. The Yankees open a two-game exhibition series against the most successful franchise in Mexican League history, Diablos Rojos del México, at Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú. New York is only taking one regular on the trip, shortstop Anthony Volpe, with several players with ties to Mexico on the traveling roster. Catcher Jose Trevino is of Mexican descent and left-hander Victor González was born and grew up in the western Mexico town of Tuxpan. González was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers along with minor-league Jorbit Vivas in December.

The Yankees will start left-hander Tanney Tully, a non-roster invitee, on Sunday. He has allowed one run in six spring training innings over three appearances. New York also added 19-year-old right-hander Luis Serna from San Luis Rio Colorado, Mexico to the traveling roster. He hasn’t pitched above rookie level since signing with the Yankees in 2021.
Several former Major League players are on the Diablos Rojos roster, most notably former Cy Young Award winner Trevor Bauer. Bauer, released by the Dodgers in January 2023 after a lengthy suspension over sexual-assault allegations, signed with the club on March 18 and plans to pitch in six games for the team.
The Diablos Rojos won the Sur (South) Division title last season with a league-best 55-32 record before losing in six games to Pericos de Puebla in the Sur Zone Series. Outfielder Ramón Flores, who played briefly for the Yankees in 2015, hit .319 for the club last season after joining the team in 2022. The club has won a record 16 Mexican League championships, most recently in 2014.
