The Pittsburgh Pirates host the New York Yankees for their home opener on Friday night.

The New York Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates start their only series of the season on Friday. The Yankees are in the midst of making history and waves around the league with their torpedo bats that are shaped like bowling pins. After going off in a homerun parade hitting nine last Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers, the bats have taken the majors by storm. The bats are legal and are being picked up by other teams. New York’s offense has benefited tremendously so far as the Yankees are off to a 4-2 start to the season. Pittsburgh might want to take some notes as the Pirates are 2-5 heading into their home opener today. The Yankees are -165 favorites on the road today.

New York’s offense went off again on Thursday in a 9-7 win to avoid a sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks and a three-game losing streak. Aaron Judge hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning which accounted for his 500th extra base hit. It is already Judge’s fifth homer of the season. Judge is the third fastest Yankee ever to reach the 500 extra base hit milestone only behind Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig. The Yankees scored all of their runs by the fourth inning. The nine runs was a career high for Arizona starter Merrill Kelly. Max Fried will start for the Yankees in the opener. He went 4.2 innings while giving up two runs in that 20-9 slugfest against the Brewers last Saturday.

The Pirates are coming off a 4-2 win against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday to avoid a sweep and ending a four-game losing streak. Paul Skenes earned his first victory of the season going seven innings while only giving up three hits and no earned runs while striking out six. Oneil Cruz hit a homer in the fifth and hit a sac fly for some more insurance in the ninth. Mitch Keller will get the start in this home opener. The righty went six innings giving up five hits and one run earning the win against the Miami Marlins for Pittsburgh’s first win of the season.
