The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels face off for a rare series between these interleague opponents, starting on Friday.

The Los Angeles Angels host the Chicago Cubs for their first and only season of the year, starting on Friday night. The Cubs are coming off a five-game homestand against the Milwaukee Brewers in a battle for the NL Central crown. The Cubs won three of the five games to gain a game in the division standings. The Brewers went on such a legendary run, hitting a peak of 13 games in a row, so they are still up seven games for first place. The good news for Chicago is that it holds the top spot for the first NL Wild Card position by 5.5 games. This is still one of the best teams in the National League. The Cubs have 12 more wins than the Angels, and therefore should be the favorite in the series opener even on the road tonight.

The Cubs are coming off a 4-1 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday in the finale of that extended series. The loss ended a three-game winning streak. Brice Turang hit a two-run homer in the second inning, which is all the run support the Brewers would need. The only run the Cubs could muster was in the fifth inning when Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a sac fly to drive in catcher Reese McGuire. Shota Imanaga would go seven innings for Chicago, but would still be tabbed with the loss after giving up just two earned runs on the Turang homer. Milwaukee would add insurance in the eighth with a two-RBI single from Isaac Collins. Chicago has yet to announce a starter for the opener against the Angels.

Los Angeles is coming off a 2-1 win on Wednesday to avoid a sweep at home against the Cincinnati Reds. Yusei Kikuchi threw seven strong innings, only giving up one run, but he still didn’t earn the win. The Reds scored in the third, and the Angels tied the game in the fourth on a Yoan Moncada homer. The Angels would then get the go-ahead run on a RBI single from Luis Rengifo in the eighth. The Angels will try to kick off this series on a good foot by starting Tyler Anderson. The lefty is trying to regain is prior form, as he comes into this start with a 2-8 record and a 4.77 ERA.
