The Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals both look to reset when they start a new series this Friday.
These NL East rivals meet for the first time this season when the Washington Nationals host the Philadelphia Phillies for a weekend series starting Friday. This will be the Phillies first road trip of the season. Philadelphia has to kick it in a higher gear after starting the season at home 2-4. The good news for the Phillies is that the rest of the division is also off to a slow start. The Phillies have lost their first two series and most recently dropped the series against the Cincinnati Reds after losing 4-1 on Wednesday in the finale. There was a long rain delay that put everyone in a funk. Starter Zack Wheeler didn’t have a bad day at all going six innings with three hits and only giving up one earned run but he was still saddled with the loss. More good news for the Phillies is that they will be the -185 favorites in the opener even on the road. They will start Aaron Nola who is 12-9 with a 4.46 ERA in 2023.

The Nationals have started with the exact same record as Philadelphia. Washington is also coming off a series loss. This one was to the Pittsburgh Pirates also at home after losing the finale 7-4 on Thursday night after a considerable rain delay. The Pirates got off to a quick start scoring four runs in the first inning and they didn’t need to look back. The Nationals tacked on a run here and there but never really threatened. The run continues Pittsburgh’s hot streak starting the season 6-1. Washington will try to rebound by starting Patrick Corbin. The veteran went 10-15 with a 5.20 ERA in 2023 but was an absolute workhorse for the club starting 32 games and going 180 innings.
