San Diego is getting hot at the right time in the season, going for its fifth straight win tonight. The Padres have already won five of their last six games, and they are now 10 games above .500 with a 78-68 record and a 32-39 mark on the road. San Diego is likely out of the NL West chase, but the Padres have the same record as the Arizona Diamondbacks, who hold the final NL Wild Card slot. Arizona has the advantage over San Diego right now because of a better head-to-head record. The Giants are just trying to play spoiler at this point, with a 62-85 record, a 36-36 home record, and already being eliminated from the playoffs. This series opener should be a close one, with the Padres likely to get the slight line advantage even on the road. San Diego will try to get their fifth straight win by starting former Giants’ lefty Robbie Ray, who they acquired at the trade deadline. Ray is 11-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 151.1 innings. The Giants will have a good shot at the upset by starting Anthony Molin, who is on a tremendous roll to start his season. He’s played three games for the Atlanta Braves and three games for the Giants. He’s earned all three of his wins with San Francisco, with a 3-0 record and a 2.79 ERA in 19.1 innings.

The Padres dominated in their last series to sweep the Washington Nationals, with a 9-2 finale win on Wednesday. Most of the production of that game came from Jackson Merrill, who homered twice and drove in a career-high six RBIs. He finished the day 4-for-5 and was just a double short of the cycle. Things started off slow for the Padres, though, with the Nationals getting on the board first with a two-run third inning. Maybe because it was the hottest recorded game in Petco Park history at 95 degrees. But the Padres settled down and only gave up four hits the entire game. San Diego used six pitchers, and none of them pitched more than 2.1 innings, but after starter Walker Buehler, the Padres’ bullpen only gave up one hit.

The Giants are playing well lately also, going for their fourth straight victory after sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals at home to play spoiler to their playoff chances. San Francisco has won four of its last five games, including the finale against St. Louis on Wednesday, 7-6. Shay Whitcomb hit an RBI double to cap off a six-run eighth inning to pull off a stunning comeback against the Cardinals to complete the sweep. The Whitcomb RBI was the go-ahead run that came with two outs. San Francisco scored one in the first inning on an RBI single from Bryce Eldridge, but they couldn’t score again until the eighth when Eldridge hit a two-run single to get the rally started.
