Spencer Torkelson’s ninth-inning RBI single to score pinch runner Eric Hasse gave the Tigers an insurance run which they sorely needed as closer Gregory Soto gave up his first earned run in six appearances but still managed to induce three ground balls to earn his 17th save of the season, locking down a Tigers 2-1 win in the series opener.
Southpaw Tarik Skubal (5-7, 4.06 ERA) will be on the mound for the Tigers tonight aiming to end a five-start losing streak. Skubal has not won a start since beating the Pirates 5-3 back on June 7, and has given up at least one home run in five of his last six starts.
The White Sox have dropped three of their last four games, with the lone win coming in extra innings against the AL Central Division-leading Twins on Wednesday.
Lucas Giolito (5-4, 4.90 ERA) gets the start for the White Sox going for his second straight win after a solid six-inning performance Sunday against the Giants. Giolito struck out seven batters and allowed just one earned run to get his first win since June 5.
Miguel Cabrera leads the Tigers with a .308 batting average and comes into tonight on a 13-game hit streak that’s seen him drive in nine runs in that span.
