The New York Yankees got early returns from their latest superstar addition, continue their 4-game series with the Houston Astros on Friday.
Juan Soto didn’t take long to make an impact for the New York Yankees (1-0), throwing out the potential tying run in the ninth inning on Thursday against the Houston Astros (0-1). The teams continue their four-game series at Minute Maid Park on Friday night. New York acquired Soto and outfielder Trent Grisham from the Padres in a seven-player deal in December and signed free-agent right-hander Marcus Stroman to bolster their starting rotation. They also got outfielder Alex Verdugo in a rare trade with the Boston Red Sox. The Astros’ big splash was adding closer Josh Hader on a five-year, $95 million deal.

The Yankees battled back from a 4-0 deficit to beat Houston 5-4 on Thursday. Verdugo’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly gave New York its only lead after Oswaldo Cabrera tied the game with a solo homer in the sixth. Soto added an RBI single to spark a three-run fifth inning.
The Astros got three runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Chas McCormick and an RBI knock by Yainer Diaz. Jake Meyers added a solo homer in the second inning but ace Framber Valdez and the bullpen couldn’t hold the lead.
Right-hander Cristian Javier takes the ball for Houston on Friday. Last season in 31 starts, Javier posted a 10-5 record with a 4.56 ERA and 1.265 WHIP in 162 innings.
