Maybe the best way to illustrate just how poorly the 2020 campaign is going for the New York Jets, you'll have to look no further than the betting line for this week's Monday Night Football matchup against the New England Patriots. Bill Belichick's team is 2-5 in clearly a season they weren't planning after the departure of Tom Brady. And still, the Patriots are favored by 9.5 points against the Jets on the road.
Nothing has gone well for the Jets and that includes news this week that starting QB Sam Darnold will not be in the lineup for the second time this season. His right shoulder is still injured and Joe Flacco will be starting in his place. There is one stat from last week that summed up the misery going on in East Rutherford, NJ. The Jets played the defending Super Bowl champions last week in a blowout by the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw five touchdowns in that game. That was one more than the entire Jets team has thrown this season.
There's no doubt why they haven't won a game and are easily on track to earn the number one pick for next season. They should undoubtedly pick Clemson star Trevor Lawrence. The only question is if he will opt out and demand to be traded like John Elway or Eli Manning did when they got drafted.
While the Patriots are certainly better, Cam Newton has been struggling tremendously since coming back after having the coronavirus. They haven't won since Week 3 of the season and have struggled turning over the ball. Newton was driving down the field in the last two minutes of last week's game against the Buffalo Bills. They needed a field goal to tie and a touchdown to win and had the ball within the 10-yard line. Instead Newton fumbled the ball and the game was over.
Everybody but the Bills Mafia felt for the guy trying to get his career back on track after injuries and a COVID-19 diagnosis. If he is able to hold onto the ball, the Patriots should have a tuneup game to help them get back to their winning ways.
