Daytona 500 winner William Byron takes the pole for Sunday’s Shriners Children’s 500 at Phoenix Raceway

William Byron, who won his second straight Daytona 500 last month, earned the pole on Saturday and will lead the field into Sunday’s Shriners Children’s 500 at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Arizona. Byron is looking to slow down Christopher Bell, who has won the last two races. Sunday’s race is just the fourth of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season and the first race of the new year on a non-superspeedway oval. That brought NASCAR’s new oval qualifying format into play, in which drivers are ordered by a four-variable metric and qualify in inverse order, with the top 10 drivers advancing to a second-round shootout for the pole.

Phoenix Raceway opened in January 1964 and has hosted a spring Cup Series race since 2005 before the drivers return in the fall for the championship race. Kevin Harvick won a record five early-season races on the one-mile dogleg oval, with Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman each winning twice.

Bell won last year’s race by a comfortable 5.465 seconds over Chris Buescher, while Byron won the 2023 edition of the event. Defending NASCAR Cup champion Joey Logano β€” the Phoenix winner in 2020 β€” starts on the outside of the first row, with Carson Hocevar and Josh Berry on Row 2, Erik Jones and Chase Elliott lined up on the third row. Michael McDowell and Justin Haley are on Row 4 and Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin round out the top 10. Bell qualified 11th.

2022 race winner Chase Briscoe starts 30th, with 2019 victor Kyle Busch lining up 15th.
